      Located in mid-southern Henan and at the Huaihe River valley, Zhumadian used to be the communication hub in ancient times. Since posthouses had been set up here in the past for couriers and officials, the city gained its name and was known as ¡°hinterland of Yu state, situated right in the middle of the country¡±. The city has 1 district and 9 counties under its jurisdiction and covers an area of 15,000 square kilometers with a population of 8.31 million. The GDP of Zhumadian amounted to RMB£¤49.625 billion in 2005.
      Zhumadian has a long history and is a fair place tending to produce outstanding figures. It is the hometown of Li Si, Prime Minister of the Qin Dynasty, Fan Zhen, a materialist thinker of the Liang Dynasty (502-557). She is also the original place of Cai, Jin and Jiang families. It is also believed to be the birthplace of Double Nine Festival (the ninth day of the ninth lunar month) and the legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet.
      Zhumadian is an important center of grain and oil production, and thus has been referred to as the "Granary of the Country", "Oil Depot" and "Kingdom of Sesame". The oil seed output ranks first in the province. The output of meat and poultry ranks second and third respectively in the province. Biyang County ranks first in the country in mushroom production while Zhengyang County first in peanut production and Pingyu County first in white sesame production. Agriculture with high-quality wheat, chestnuts in Queshan County, flowers and trees in Shangcai County as unique features is noted in China. More than 20 kinds of mineral resources have been found in Zhumadian. And thee are a large number of places of cultural interest and natural beauty, such as the Chaya Mountain which is designated as the national geological park, the national forest park Bobai Lake, the Suya Lake, the largest manmade lake in the country where numerous ducks inhabit, the native place of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, the tomb of Li Si, the Memorial Hall of General Yang Jingyu, the national hero in the war of resistance against Japan, and Zhugou Town, a former revolutionary base which is called the ¡°Little Yan¡¯an¡±.
A complete industrial system has been established with pharmacies, machinery, electronics, building materials, and grain and oil processing as its mainstay. A group of outstanding backbone enterprises have emerged, such as Tianfang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Yunan Cement Co., Ltd., Junma Chemical Co., Ltd., Blue Sky Group, Huajun Vehicle Co., Ltd., and Wang Shouyi Multi-flavoured Spice Group Co., Ltd..
      Zhumadian is endowed with advantageous location for development and it enjoys convenient transportation. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, four expressways of Beijing-Shenzhen, Ah-Shen, Xin-Yang and Shang-Wu as well as No. 106 and No. 107 National Highways traverse the city from the north to the south. The city is merely 100 kilometers or so away from Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport. The waterway on the Huaihe River leads to Anhui Province to the east and the Yangtze River to the south, and going all the way down to Shanghai.
