      Jiyuan is located in northwestern Henan and gets its name as it was the source of ancient Jishui River. Bordering the Taihang Mountain in the north, the Wangwu Mountain in the west, and the Yellow River in the south, Jiyuan covers a total area of 1,931 square kilometers and has a population of 660,000.
      The city is now in the list of "National Excellent Tourism City". It enjoys rich tourism resources. Its unique natural scenery and thousands of years of human civilization have created famous beautiful landscape. The Wangwu Mountain, known as a national key scenic spot and a national geological park, is said to be the place where the Yellow Emperor, whose surname is Xuanyuan, offered sacrifices to the Heaven, and the mountain that was removed by the legendary Foolish Old Man. The Xiaolangdi Reservoir on the Yellow River is a milestone in the Chinese history of harnessing the Yellow River and a masterpiece of water-control project in the world. Wulongkou Scenic Spot, once praised by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty for its idyllic scenery and historical relics, is a National AAAA Grade Scenic Area and a National Nature Reserve for Macaques. Jidu Temple is widely known as the source of the Jishui River. The 16-hectare Basketball Town in Jiyuan can host international individual events, such as sport competitions of basketball, volleyball, and table tennis, etc. It can hold grand theatrical performances as well.
      Jiyuan has been endowed with an advantageous location and convenient transportation. No. 207 National Highway, the Xinxiang-Jiyuan provincial highway and Jiyuan-Yangcheng highway run through the city, meet various local highways and extend in all directions. The Jiyuan-Jiaozuo Expressway and Jiyuan-Luoyang Expreeway are now open to traffic. The city is only 30 kilometers away from the Zhengzhou-Kaifeng Expressway and the Luoyang Airport.
      The economy of Jiyuan is booming with a balanced development between industry and agriculture. With a solid agricultural foundation, Jiyuan abounds in grain, cotton, oil and tobacco. In recent years, Jiyuan has taken advantage of its unique resources and established an industrial system with energy, building materials, metallurgy, ceramics, chemical, machinery, electronics and electrical appliances as its mainstay industries. A group of large and medium-sized backbone enterprises have been set up in the city, such as Henan Yuguang Gold and Lead Co., Ltd., Jiyuan Iron & Steel Company, Henan Benyue Group Corporation, Yuyuan Electric Power Group Corporation, etc. The GDP of the city amounted to RMB£¤15 billion in 2005, increasing by 16.2% as against the previous year.
      Jiyuan has established friendly relationship with Niiza, Japan.
