Xinxiang, located in northern Henan with Taihang Mountain to its north and the Yellow River to its south, covers an area of 8,169 square kilometers and has a population of over 5.5 million with 2 cities, 6 counties, 4 districts and 1 High-Tech Industrial Development Zone under its jurisdiction. In 2005, its GDP reached 54.3 billion RMB yuan; the per-capita disposable income of urban residents was 8,312 RMB yuan while the per-capita net income of rural residents amounted to 3,133 RMB yuan. The total import and export value was US$ 530 million.
Xinxiang was called Yong Kingdom in ancient times. During the Spring and Autumn Period she belonged to the Wei Kingdom and then to Wei State during the Warring States Period, and was renamed Huajia during the Han Dynasty. Since the sixth year of the reign of Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty (586 A. D), Xinxiang County has been established and it has existed ever since. National and provincial scenic spots and places of historic interest include Bi Gan Temple, the Tomb of King Lu, Baiquan (One Hundred Springs), the Ruins of Meng Zhuang, White Cloud Temple National Forest Park, National Nature Reserve for Wetland Birds, Wanxian Mountain, Bali Valley, and Jinghua Garden.
Xinxiang was endowed with abundant natural resources and favourable geographical conditions. At present, more than 20 kinds of minerals have been discovered and mined here. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Xinxiang-Heze Railway and Xinxiang-Jiaozuo Railway meet in Xinxiang, No. 106 and No. 107 National Highways pass through the city from north to south, and the Xinxiang-Zhengzhou Expressway together with the No.2 Highway Bridge across the Yellow River has been opened to traffic, establishing an efficient transportation network.
As an important industrial base of the country, Xinxiang has developed into an industrialized city with 6 mainstay industries, namely, electronics, light industry, machinery, medicine, energy and building materials. A number of large-scale enterprises and their products are well known in both domestic and international markets, such as Frestech Electric Appliances Co., Ltd., Golden Dragon Copper Tube Co., Ltd., Aigrette Chemical Fibre Company and Hualan Biological Engineering Co., Ltd., etc. Xinxiang has strived to promote the opening and reform in an all-round way. In 2005 as much as RMB£¤4.8 billion was introduced to the city from the outside and US$60.16 million of foreign capital was actually utilized. The total export and import value reached US$ 530 million.
Xinxiang has served as both a major production base of grain and cotton and a national production base of high-quality wheat. Yuanyang Rice and Fengqiu Honeysuckle have gained fame at home and abroad. By way of producing high-quality wheat, Xinxiang continues its vigorous adjustment of the agricultural structure so as to increase the income of farmers.
Apart from the 8 colleges and universities in Xinxiang, there are also 105 scientific research institutes in the city, among which are the China Research Institute of Irrigation, China Research Institute of Radio Wave Propagation, and the Cultivation Base of the State Key Lab of Cell Differentiation Control. Post-doctorial Research Stations were recently set up in such major enterprises as Frestech Electric Appliances Co., Ltd., Golden Dragon Copper Tube Co., Ltd., and Hualan Biological Engineering Co., Ltd. so as to further improve the quality of their products.
Xinxiang has established friendly relationship with Kashiwabara of Japan and Itajai of Brazil.
