Hebi is located in northern Henan and the eastern part of the Taihang Mountain. The name of the city originated from a legend about a celestial crane perching on the steep cliff of the Southern Mountains. Hebi covers an area of 2,182 square kilometers and has a population of more than 1.4 million with 2 counties and 3 districts under its jurisdiction. The GDP broke through RMB£¤18 billion in 2005.
Hebi has unique natural and man-made landscapes. The Dapi Mountain and Fuqiu Mountain in Xuanxian County, facing each other and towering into the sky, contain numerous cultural relics. The eight-zhang-high stone Buddha statue inside seven-zhang-high building is a great view under heaven (zhang, a Chinese unit of length, is about 3.3 meters). The Yunmeng Mountain in Qixian County is commonly known as the "Yunmeng fairyland", where Master Wang Chan, namely Gui Guzi of the Warring States Period was said to have taught his strategic theories and instructed his followers, hence this region was also known as "China's First Military School." On both sides of Qihe River, numerous precipitous peaks compete for beauty and grandeur, presenting spectacular scenery. Groups of stone carvings and statues on Moya Cliff are in different poses and expressions, both vivid and lively. The volcano mantle window in Shangyu Valley is known as the "First Wonder of China", which would be of great help for scientists to reveal secrets of the Earth 1,000 meters beneath its surface.
Hebi is a national base of energy and heavy chemical industries; meanwhile, it is a comprehensive agricultural development zone on the Alluvial Plain of the Yellow River, the Huaihe River and the Haihe River. Over 30 categories of minerals have been discovered in Hebi and the reserves of ten kinds have been identified, including coal, cement rock, and dolomite, all of which are well worth mining. The major agricultural products of the city are wheat, corn, peanuts, etc. Hebi is now one of the national production bases of high quality wheat and commodity grain. Special local products such as the "Qihe River's three treasures", i.e., crucian carp, duck eggs and Herba Raddosiae have gained fame at home and abroad. Hebi is also an animal husbandry base of producing, processing and exporting livestock.
Hebi has laid a solid foundation for industry. A large number of enterprise groups have emerged in recent years, such as Hebi Coal Group, Wanhe Electric Power Company, Yuhe Cement Company, Tianhai Electrical Appliance Company, Boda Electronics Group, Tianma Telecommunication Group, and Tianyuan Corporation. An industrial system has been established with energy, metallurgy, machinery, electronics, building materials, chemical, and light textiles as its mainstay industries. Among the products, such brands as "Kexing" spray insecticide, "Daisi" hair mousse, "Huanyan" tire, "Chaoge" cotton yarn, "Tianhai" car plug-in units, etc. have occupied an important position among similar trades in the province as well as in the whole country.
The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway, and No.107 National Highway run through the city from north to south; both the national project of diverting water from the south to the north and the project of laying the Beijing-Wuhan-Guangzhou International Telecommunication Optical Cable have the city involved. The Hebi-Puyang Expressway has been open to traffic. Once the Hebi-Jiaozuo Expressway is completed and put into use, Hebi will become a cross-shaped transportation center in northern Henan.
Hebi has been accredited as National Excellent Tourism City and Provincial Sanitary City.
